17th PalmJazz Festival: Emiliano D’Auria – ‘Brooklyn Bound’ and Adam Makowicz – ‘Solo’

Brooklyn Bound is a project born out of Emiliano D’Auria’s collaboration with musicians from the New York jazz scene. The Italian pianist and composer has been developing his own musical language for years, combining European sensibility with the energy and freedom of improvisation for which New York is renowned. The result of these collaborations is a band in which diverse musical experiences come together to form a natural and cohesive whole.

D’Aurii’s original compositions unfold at a leisurely pace, leaving the musicians space for dialogue and to build a narrative together. The bandleader does not focus on showy displays, but rather on the band’s sound, mutual listening and improvisation, which becomes an integral part of every composition. It is music full of subtlety, imagination and emotion, striking a balance between a precisely notated form and creative freedom.

The concert at PalmJazz will be an encounter with a project that demonstrates just how much can happen when musicians from different corners of the world find a common musical language.

Line-up:

• Emiliano D’Auria – piano

• Philip Dizack – trumpet

• Jaleel Shaw* – alto saxophone (to be confirmed by the band)

• Jacopo Ferrazza – double bass

• Joe Dyson – drums

2. Adam Makowicz Solo (PL)

Adam Makowicz’s story began in Silesia. It was in Rybnik that he discovered jazz, which – as he himself recalls – became for him “a world of freedom and improvisation”. His fascination with the music of Art Tatum and Erroll Garner took him from the Helicon club in Kraków to the world’s greatest stages. He has lived in New York since the late 1970s, where he has collaborated with Benny Goodman, Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Sarah Vaughan and many other jazz legends, whilst remaining closely connected to Poland and his native Silesia.

At PalmJazz, Adam Makowicz will present the programme *Welcome Back, Adam*, the title of which refers to his first American album, recorded for Columbia Records upon his arrival in the United States. It is a musical reflection on the journey he has undertaken since then – from his early years in New York to his most recent recordings. However, this is not a journey into the past, but the story of an artist who, despite his impressive body of work, remains open to new musical inspirations.

Solo recitals have held a special place in Adam Makowicz’s artistic practice for many years. Without a band and without set programmes, what remains is what matters most to him – the piano, improvisation and the freedom to create. Each concert unfolds at its own pace, and familiar themes are given new life, confirming that true jazz is born precisely at the moment the artist meets the audience
