The exhibition was created to mark the 500th anniversary of Tarnowskie Góry. However, it is not a traditional historical exhibition – it does not recount the history of the Market Square in chronological order. By focusing on its social and cultural functions, it invites visitors to view it from three perspectives: firstly as a venue for communal celebrations and municipal festivities, then as a space for everyday life, and finally as an administrative centre from which the town was governed for centuries. The artefacts, photographs and archival materials on display weave together into a multi-layered narrative – a unique collage revealing the diverse facets of this place. The title of the exhibition can be interpreted in two ways. It is here in the Market Square that we can ‘encounter’ the city, centred on its historic heart, but it is also here that its community comes together. In the Market Square, people work, rest, celebrate, demonstrate, pray or simply cross it on their way to one of the eight streets leading off it.
