We’ve pulled it off! Tarnowskie Góry – a Cyclist-Friendly Municipality
For the first time in its history, Tarnowskie Góry has been named the winner of the PTTK’s nationwide competition, ‘Cyclist-Friendly Municipality as rated by cycling tourists’. This accolade, awarded as part of the 15th edition of the poll, is irrefutable proof that the town is becoming a true paradise for cycling enthusiasts.
The award was formally accepted in the capital today (22 October) by Deputy Mayor Bartosz Skawiński, thereby sealing a huge success resulting from the work of the local council, tourist organisations and, above all, the commitment of our community.
What makes this title so special is the fact that the main judges were cyclists themselves. The aim of the PTTK initiative is to honour local authorities that not only build infrastructure and ensure safety, but also genuinely listen to the needs of cyclists. In the first stage, it was you – cyclists, the everyday users of the city’s cycle routes – who nominated candidates, assessing the measures taken in the city in 2025. Your votes gave us the green light to proceed to the second stage, in which the local authority had to defend its position by answering detailed questions regarding infrastructure investments, published maps, guidebooks and general support for cycle tourism.
This success didn’t come out of nowhere. The trophy we received in Warsaw is the result of a vibrant calendar of local events: from the flagship summer event, Tour de TG, during which you cycle kilometres to win a water bottle or a T-shirt, through ‘Cycling May’, which gets the youngest residents active, and numerous rides and excursions, right up to the international cycling congress. In Tarnowskie Góry, a bicycle is more than just a means of transport – it’s a way of spending your free time, as evidenced by the regularly organised events that attract huge crowds. We cannot fail to mention the work of the Local Tourist Organisation of the City of Gwarków, which, amongst other things, created the interactive guide TRASEO. It is thanks to its commitment that tourists and residents have access to excellent resources promoting active leisure by bike.
Today’s award is a wonderful culmination of all these efforts and a huge boost of motivation to ensure that, in the years to come, Tarnowskie Góry keeps moving even faster and more safely!
And we’d like to remind you: we’re carrying on! We’re building more cycle paths, creating a cycle-friendly infrastructure for you and, step by step, implementing the city’s cycling policy.
