Is it possible to show pupils in a few days what Silesia is? Is it possible to explain the interesting and at the same time difficult history of this region, its beauty, traditions, Silesian dialect and the character of its people? No, but to encourage pupils to think about what the place they live in means to them, a Silesian Week was held at School and Kindergarten Complex No. 2. Four days of celebrating Silesianness together.

Mrs Joanna Frączek wrote to us about what it was like:

"To start with, the fifth-grade pupils talked about where these Silesians come from, where richtig tyn Ślonsk jest, kero rzyka sam płylo, and they also showed us some places, and we knew these places, and there were also Tarnowskie Góry, which is having its 500th flight this year, and Pniowiec was also there. And after that we talked about what these Silesians are like. And they told us that the most important thing for Silesians is family. And that they have their elders in their hearts. Slonzok, wherever he is, always remembers what he is stond. Pamiynto o swojyj ziymi i przaje tyj ziymi, jak żodnyj inkszyj.

Ślonzoki som robotny, som ty tyż stubaru i majom hwoord. Ślonzok robi swoje swoje i zno, wiela je we wercie, więc piy robi skirz tego strogigo larm. I dycki, jak co robi, to myśli, gdyby gdyby gdyby by podob podobać to Ponboczek. It is also possible to recognise the Slavs by the fact that they speak their own language. In school it was possible to find signatures in the Silesian dialect, e.g. zola, gelynder, trzewiki etc.

We also listened to "Kommissar Hanusik", about beboki and podciepach, which was a bit more to the point.

At the end there was the story of those Silesians who won the Nobel Prize and we didn't know there were so many of them. But now we know and we are glad that the Silesian land has produced so many smart people.

The second day was devoted to Silesian cuisine, and the pupils also made dumplings, or gumiklyjzy. And we had a record, because in three minutes we kneaded more than three. We made dumplings on time, who made more in three minutes, but also the coolest ones. And this our work was judged by two mothers, because they were so familiar with balling. Afterwards everyone got to taste the noodles and everyone said that they were very good.

And you should also know that there was also Silesian food that day: ajntop, buchty with lingonberries, karminadle with ciapkapustom, rye sour rye soup, szałot, wuszt from the grill, ajlauf, krupy with pig stew, krancki kiszenioka.

And on the third day, which was Wednesday, the Miedarzans arrived. They are also celebrating their 30th anniversary this year. And there were dance and singing workshops. And the musicians from the band talked about their instruments. And we learnt a lot of interesting things about the Silesian costume. And we sang and danced. And that was also richtig cool.

And on the last day there was a quiz on the knowledge of the Silesian language. And it turned out that some people knew the language very well. Probably because they speak it at home with their fathers and grandfathers.

And there were other competitions. Each class prepared a poster about what Silesia means to them. Some had a house, which was on a tree, and the tree grew out of the ground, in which it was deeply buried. Others had fat, noodles, beboki. And still others, that Silesia is not so black, but bright and green.

There was also a competition for a bebok from Piniowiec. You should have seen how many different beboks they came up with. If only we hadn't met these beboks somewhere!

And we had a lot of guests. And there was also a teacher, who used to teach at our school. She told us how it used to be the first time in school, and that they couldn't speak our language. But we are glad that we can speak. And you know what else? We are proud of our language, history, customs and traditions. We wouldn't like to forget it, because it's good to know who you are.

At the end of the Silesian Week we sang, then we danced trojoka and miotlorza on the playing field, and got a piece of kołocz.

It was great!"
